Les fêtes de l'Assomption de la Vierge Marie (the Assumption of the Virgin Mary) as celebrated by the cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th August 2013. During the evening of Wednesday 14th there was a river parade of 14 boats carrying around 5,000 worshipers singing hymns and carrying candles around the Ile de la Cité and Ile St Louis and back again, on foot, via Quai St Bernard and Quai de la Tournelle. During the afternoon of Thursday 15th August, the subject of these photos, a street parade of up to 10,000 people, lead by a silver statue of the Virgin Mary, from Notre Dame, via Quai de la Corse, past Sainte Chapelle, along quais Saint-Michel, Montebello and Tournelle, across the Pont de la Tournelle, on to the Ile St Louis, returning to Notre Dame via Quai d'Orléans and Rue de la Cloitre Notre Dame. Following the procession, mass (messe) was held in Notre Dame. The celebrations were presided over by cardinal André Vingt-Trois (Cardinal André 23rd), the Archbishop (Archevêque) of Paris.
