Help for Heroes Bike Ride19.jpg
A wreath laying ceremony at the cemetery of Etaples, the largest CWGC cemetery in France, containing 10,771 First World War burials of which only 35 remain unidentified, on the fourth day of the Help for Heroes Big Battlefields Bike Ride from Paris to London. The day commenced from Le Touquet and proceeded to Etaples, which had been home to the British Army's largest training camp during the Second World War, as well as having military prisons and hospitals. Here, in the War Cemetary at Etaples, in front of a memorial designed by Edwin Lutyens, a wreath laying ceremony was conducted. Lunch was taken just north of Boulogne, beside the Canadian Military Cemetary where Lt. Col. John McCrae was buried and a second wreath laying ceremony was held. Finally, before arriving at Calais, there was a visit to Mimoyecques, an old quarry from which the Germans created a substantial subterranean base, to house their V3 rocket, with which they hoped to destroy London.
